Beaufre, Hart Clausewitz and the national strategy challenges

The author analyzes the “Introduction to Strategy”, book of the french André Beaufre, highlighting the vision of this outstanding military strategy thinker, related concepts and their applications. In this sense, correlates Beaufre’s ideas with Lidddell Hart, Clausewitz and other classic strategists, where relevant. Describes the five models of strategic planning, underlining its actuality. Highlights the principle of freedom of action as an unique aspect of Beaufre’s ideas. Analyzes the two modes of strategy, Direct and Indirect, and its application in the world today. It concludes on the prevalence of Indirect mode (Indirect Strategy), emphasizing the preservation of freedom of action and the ability to deny it to the opponent as the basis of the strategic game. Finally, highlights the importance to the nations to develop appropriate strategies to ensure their national interests in times of uncertainty.
